Abstract

The adoption of digital technologies in higher education has expanded access to digital information resources for teaching, learning, and research. This study examined the influence of personal factors and information literacy skills on the use of digital information resources among undergraduate students in selected private universities in Oyo State, Nigeria. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. The study involved 121 undergraduate students enrolled in Library and Information Science programmes at Ajayi Crowther University, Lead City University, and KolaDaisi University. The total enumeration sampling technique was used due to the small population size. Data were collected through a questionnaire and analysed using descriptive statistics, Pearson Product-Moment Correlation, and multiple regression analysis at the 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that confidence in using computers (mean = 3.32), motivation to use digital resources regularly (mean = 3.29), prior experience with computers (mean = 3.28), enjoyment of using digital technologies (mean = 3.26), and ability to evaluate online information credibility (mean = 3.20) were the major personal factors influencing students' use of digital information resources. Respondents demonstrated a high level of information literacy skills (grand mean = 3.24), with understanding of the need for information resources in research (mean = 3.32) rated highest, while search engines (78), Google Scholar (74), general internet resources (71), e-lecture notes (67), and educational websites (63) were the most frequently utilised digital information resources on a daily basis. Significant positive relationships were found between personal factors and digital information resource use (r = 0.486, p < 0.05) and between information literacy skills and digital information resource use (r = 0.572, p < 0.05). Multiple regression analysis further revealed a significant joint influence of the two variables on digital information resource use (R = 0.641, Adjusted R² = 0.401, p < 0.05), accounting for approximately 40.1% of the variance. The study concludes that strengthening information literacy skills and fostering positive personal attributes such as confidence and motivation are essential for improving undergraduate students' effective use of digital information resources.
