Abstract

There is an emerging global recognition of the value of indigenous knowledge for sustainable development. This indigenous knowledge includes the indigenous quantification techniques or local quantification. This ethnomathematics paper is aimed to ascertain local quantification techniques unique to the Agta of Sierra Madre Mountains, Philippines and how these techniques are utilized in their everyday living. It includes their knowledge of their numeration system, length and weight measures, time, geometry, patterns and sequences. Their length measures were also compared to metric system. In-depth interview and participant observation were rendered to gather information. A review of documentary materials and readings was done to enrich the researchers’ knowledge of the culture, knowledge systems, and practices of the respondents. Findings revealed that the Agta’s quantification system is unique and simple, anchored on their physical attributes, based on their immediate primary needs for survival, transmitted by their elders and associated on the availability of natural resources. These indigenous quantification techniques should be considered in the formulation of IPs education curriculum and activities to preserve these from disappearance and to sustain cultural survival amidst technology development.
